3M to withdraw from PFAS production by the end of 2025, such as classic 3M Novec HFE7500 fluorine oil, HFE7200/HFE7100 fluorine oil and other products (reprint)

SÃO Paulo, Minn., Dec. 20, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — 3M (NYSE: MMM) today announced that it will withdraw from the production of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) by the end of 2025 and is working to discontinue the use of PFAS in its portfolio. 3M’s decision is based on careful consideration and a comprehensive assessment of the changing external environment, including factors such as accelerating regulatory trends, a focus on reducing or eliminating the presence of PFAS in the environment, and changing stakeholder expectations.

Mike Roman, Chairman and CEO of 3M, said, “This is a time when 3M needs to be known for innovation. “While PFAS are safe to manufacture and use, we also see an opportunity to lead in a rapidly evolving external regulatory and commercial environment to make the greatest impact for the customers we serve. This acquisition is another example of 3M’s continued sustainable growth by optimizing our product portfolio, innovating for our customers, and creating long-term value for our shareholders. ”

3M will:

Discontinue all PFAS production by the end of 2025: 3M will discontinue all fluoropolymers, fluorinated fluids, and PFAS-based additive products. We will help our customers make the transition in an orderly manner. 3M intends to meet its current contractual obligations during the transition period.

Strive to end the use of PFAS in our portfolio by the end of 2025: Over the past three years, we have reduced the use of PFAS through ongoing research and development and will continue to innovate new solutions for our customers.

Through these two actions, 3M is committed to innovation to reduce reliance on PFAS. 3M’s products are safe for their intended use. 3M will continue to correct PFAS and resolve the lawsuit by defending itself in court or by negotiating a settlement, all of which are appropriate.

About PFAS

PFAS are essential in the manufacturing of many products that are critical to modern life, including medical technology, semiconductors, batteries, telephones, automobiles, and aircraft. 3M’s products are safe and effective for their intended use.
